St Anne's Infants' School

Reach for the Stars

Please read at home with your child at least 3 times per week. This does not need to be for any longer than 10-15 minutes. It is helpful to hear your child read aloud so they can work on their expression and fluency. Feel free to write a comment in their reading records or to tick the Pasta Reading Challenge grid to say you have heard them read.

If your child reads three times per week, they will recieve a piece of pasta to put into the jar. When the jar is filled, the children can choose a class treat to enjoy for all their efforts!

We have a range of books available for your children to read and they are allowed to swap their books during the week. The children do this themselves but need to bring in their current book in order to swap this. In Year 2, we encourage the children to ask the teacher to go and change their books themselves.

Your child will also have Guided Reading with the class teacher during the week where we work on reading strategies and answering questions about the text.

Tips to get started with reading at home..

  • Read in a quiet place - turn the TV off, sit together and encourage your child to hold the book and turn the pages independently.
  • Look at the title, front cover and blurb - talk about what the book might be about.
  • Say "This book is called…It is about…"
  • Before reading a book for the first time, look through the book with your child, talk about what is happening in the pictures, and what might happen at the end. Don’t read it to your child.
  • NOW start reading the book.
