St Anne's Infants' School

Reach for the Stars

We love reading in Year 1 and we seize every opportunity to listen to, re-tell and share stories together.

Please read at home with your child at least 3 times per week. It is helpful to hear your child read aloud so, with your support, they can work on their expression, fluency and comprehension.   Please write a brief comment in your child's reading record - we would also love to hear the about any further reading your child has enjoyed for example, other books, menus, magazines, road signs.

To encourage a pleasure of reading we have an exciting whole school reading challenge.  If your child reads three times per week, they will receive a piece of pasta to put into the class reading jar. When the jar is filled, the children can choose a class treat to enjoy for all their efforts! Don't forget to tick the reading grid attached to their reading records.

Books are changed when they have been heard read twice and we encourage the children to do this themselves so that they are choosing a book of interest to them.  Some children need an gentle reminder from home to change their books!  Please note, from book band Turquoise 17 onwards, books can be changed after one reading.

If you ever have any questions about supporting your child to read at home, please do not hesitate to ask.

Happy reading!  smiley
