Term 1

For the first week of term 1 we will be getting to know each other and learning the routines of Year One alongside some exciting activities based around the book, Beegu. The teachers have planned a variety of fun and exciting activities all designed to help children build relationships with each other and their class teachers. 

The provision in the classroom in term 1 will be similar to Reception in some ways. There will activities and learning in the provision for us to explore alongside access to an outside area for our learning. We will be enjoying getting to know one another, sharing stories and engaging in activities related to these.

As writers, we will develop our knowledge of using our sounds to write words and explore how to write simple sentences. In reading, we will be working on securing our phonic knowledge and learning how to segment and blend words (that is, to take a word apart and read each single sound e.g. c-a-t and then put it together to read the whole word 'cat'). We will also be doing lots of work on reading and writing our tricky words. These are called 'galaxy words' and they are words we just need to learn to read by sight. 

As mathematicians, we will be exploring and securing our knowledge of numbers to 20 by counting and ordering numbers. We will be making numbers out of objects, writing our numbers, finding more and less and ordering them. We will also focus on correctly forming our numbers too!

In our enquiry, we will be exploring the question, 'what is my hat made from?' We will be historians and philosophers thinking about all of the people who help us in our everyday lives as well as significant individuals who helped us in the past.

We will also enjoy being athletes in our PE lessons and musicians in our music lessons.
