Term 6

Welcome back to Venus and Neptune for our final term of Year 1! We have a busy term planned with lots of exciting learning opportunities for the children. There will also be time dedicated to the transition to Year 2 where the children will meet their new teacher and visit their new classrooms.

Enquiry

We will begin the term as Scientists in our new enquiry What Am I? We will be learning all about the different types of animals and about classifications such as vertebrate and invertebrate and carnivore / herbivore / omnivore. Our trip to Noah’s Ark will give us first-hand experience of many different animals and we will be doing an animal classification workshop as part of the visit. We will also be doing the final part of our seasonal change enquiry What Changes Around Me? and finding out all about the season of summer.

Readers

Year 1 were busy practicing stretching and reading words using our phonic knowledge in Term 5 and this will continue in Term 6. Please continue to look out for the homework each Friday which contains words for the children to read and write using the GPCs we have learnt in phonics. We will also be enjoying the lovely story The Lion Inside and exploring non-fiction books about animals.

Authors

In English we will be retelling the story The Lion Inside and writing our own version of the story with exciting setting descriptions and narrative language. We will also be using our knowledge about animal classification to write our own animal fact files. We will continue to practice our letter formation and sitting our letters correctly on or below the line as well as making sure that our sentences have full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.

Mathematicians

As mathematicians we will be embedding our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will also be securing our place value knowledge of numbers to 100 by understanding numbers in their tens and ones (e.g. 52 as 5 tens and 2 ones). We will be learning to tell the time to the hour and half hour and become confident with ordering and using the days of the week and months of the year.

Athletes

 

Neptune class will do PE on Mondays and Thursdays this term. 

 

Venus class will do PE on Thursdays and Fridays. (Please note that the children from Venus class coming to Forest School this term only do their Thursday PE session). 

 

On Thursdays, Year 1's PE lessons will be Athletics in preparation for Sports Day!
