Investigation 3 - Identify and classify

Science Day!

YEAR ONE

This term for our Science Investigation day we thought about how scientists identify and classify animals. We looked carefully at the different ways scientists group animals and place animals into the different categories: mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, insect.

We looked at what was similar and different about these animals and as scientists we grouped them. We worked collaboratively and shared our ideas with our partners, suggesting answers to questions.

We then heard that a never-seen-before animal had been discovered in the Rainforest!

We had to use our new skills in order to classify this new animal into one of the groups we had identified. We looked at the animal carefully and discussed with our partner its features and then decided to identify it by giving it a new name and categorise by putting it into the group it shared the most similarities with!

YEAR TWO

This term for our Science Investigation day we thought about how scientists identify and classify animals. We looked carefully at the terminology; herbivore, omnivore and carnivore and unpicked what these terms meant. We then worked collaboratively to group animals based on their features and looked carefully at the clues about what they ate in order to group them.

We then heard about a new animal that had been discovered in the African Grasslands!

We had to use our new skills in order to classify this new animal into one of the three groups. We looked at it’s teeth, it’s footprint and even it’s poo to decide which category this new animal could belong to!
