Term 4

The year one team welcome you back to start an exciting new Spring term. We hope that you had fun over the half term and that you have re-charged your batteries ready for the adventures that await you!

We also welcome back Mrs Johnson, who returns to Neptune class after a terms teaching experience in another Bristol school, we look forward to hearing about the new teaching ideas that she has explored.

Author Writers:

As author writers we will be continuing our exploration of non-fiction writing.  We will be asking and answering questions about our local area.  We will also be exploring a range of fiction texts.  We will be using these texts to help us learn....

  • how to link sentences together to write a story
  • what a verb is and how we can use verbs in our writing
  • when we need to use ? and !
  • how to use 'and' to join sentences together
  • how to describe characters and settings

Phonics

We are consolidating the phonic sounds learnt so far with the children and focusing on the correct spellings of the phonemes within words and sentences. There are some new phonemes being introduced this term, which are:  a-e, i-e, o-e, air, igh.

Phonics play is a great resource to use to support learning these sounds. The children enjoy playing 'Obb and Bob' where they need to read a range of real and alien words containing these sounds (if you click on each phase, the different sounds are containing within there):

Please don't forget to practise reading alien and real words each week with your child.  You will find a new sheet every Friday in your child's book bag!

Mathematicians:

As mathematician's we are learning how to measure height, length, weight and volume using cubes and rulers.

Enquiry:

We start this term continuing the enquiry ‘Where is my City’ and as geographers will begin to compare our city to other cities and countries worldwide. We will read a classic story called ‘Town Mouse and Country Mouse’ to introduce this comparison skill. The next enquiry is ‘How do I move around?’ and will explore our bodies and moving parts as engineers and athletes.

RE and Music

In RE this term, we will be exploring the big question 'How do people celebrate their journey through life?'

Towards the end of the term we will be learning about Easter and plan to visit the church on Thursday 2nd April at 10.15am. There is a Science afternoon in week 3 and our Music topic this term is called 'Animals and story time'.

Wow! Such a lot of fun to look forward to over the next 6 weeks, we look forward to exploring it all with you.
