Summer Term 5

As Year 1 progresses, we’re excited about lots more fun learning ahead! With the promise of some nice weather we’re hoping to spend even more time outside the classroom, exploring and enjoying a wide range of enriching learning opportunities.

In our first week back, we’ll become scientists and geographers to revisit our enquiry question: “How does our school change?”. We began our enquiry in Term 4 by planting beans, peas and lots of flowers in the Year 1 garden. We are looking forward to seeing our efforts pay off and making the school more colourful! We will investigate hot and cold areas of the world and identify them on a globe and note any more seasonal changes we discover.

For our second enquiry, the children will become engineers and scientists as we explore “What is my hat made from?”. With a focus on materials, we’ll investigate and test which material is best to use as a hat, then design and create our own hats using our findings. To celebrate our learning, we will put on a fashion show to showcase our fantastic work!

As authors, the children will continue to develop their phonics skills, adding exciting adjectives and using conjunctions to make their sentences sparkle! They’ll also have opportunities to retell the story of Hansel and Gretel in the past tense and explore new texts, such as ‘The King’s Pants’.

In phonics, Year 1 will continue learning alternate sounds (-y, y, ow, c, g, ge, dge, ire, are) – which will boost both reading and writing skills. We’ll continue practising with Phonics Screener papers to build confidence for June.

As mathematicians, we’ll keep building fluency and confidence with numbers through our Mastering Number sessions. This term, we’ll explore addition and subtraction facts within 10 as well as doubling and halving.

Don’t forget to check the school website for photos of our learning adventures!
