Reach for the Stars

Autumn Term 1

In Term 1 we will be spending lots of time getting to know the children and learning what they can do so we can set appropriate targets for their learning. Our enquiry will be "Who am I?" The children will be thinking about what makes them who they are, their families, interests and bodies. We will be reading the books 'On Sudden Hill' and 'Monkey Puzzle' in literacy to enhance this learning.

In Phonics we will be introducing the children to single letter sounds and listening for these sounds at the start of words. We will also practise writing the sounds and using them to label pictures. We follow the 'Success for All' phonics scheme and use their ditties and picture cards to help children to learn the shape of each sound. You can support your child at home by playing games such as 'I Spy' to hear the initial sounds of words and by looking at letters that you see in books and on signs and packaging.

In Maths we will be looking carefully at objects and matching/sorting into groups, comparing quantities in groups and looking at pattern.  We will be exploring in detail numbers 1,2,3 learning to read, write and order them.  We  will use different resources to represent numbers, practise our counting skills and begin to understand the place value of  numbers. To support your child at home, you can 'count everything': number of stairs/steps, cars on the street, peas on a plate, segments in an orange, fingers, toes, claps, toys, sounds etc.  Search for numbers in your house (books, remote control, clock, telephone, food packaging, diary)  and out and about (car registration numbers, door numbers, shop labels, street signs, buses). Talking about numbers and shapes will really support your child's development in this area.
