Welcome to Year 1!

For the first two weeks of term, we will be focussing on settling the children into their new classes and getting to know their new routines. We will be reading lots of stories and taking part in a range of fun, practical and creative activities to build relationships with each other and the adults in our classroom, while helping the children to feel happy, confident and secure in their new environment.

We will also be exploring our emotions and learning about the Zones of Regulation, helping the children to recognise and talk about how they are feeling and what they can do to help themselves feel ready to learn.

As the term goes on, we will be getting stuck into lots of new and exciting learning!

What Do Artists Do?

Our first enquiry will be What Do Artists Do? We will be exploring the work of different artists and experimenting with a range of art techniques, including Pointillism and colour mixing. We will also be very lucky to have an artist come into school to work with the children. Our learning will culminate in an exciting art showcase, where the children will have the opportunity to share and celebrate their artwork.

What Grows Near Me?

Our second enquiry is called What Grows Near Me? The children will be learning about local plant life and exploring what grows in our local environment. We will also be learning about healthy food and having lots of opportunities to prepare and make healthy dishes. As part of our enquiry, we will be visiting a community orchard to develop our learning further.

 

As readers, we will be recapping our phonics knowledge and getting ourselves ready to learn new GPCs. We will also enjoy daily story times, sharing lots of wonderful books together as a class.

We will be using our growing phonics knowledge as authors too, developing our confidence in writing simple sentences with finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. Stories such as The Three Little Pigs and We're Going on a Bear Hunt will inspire our writing and provide lots of opportunities for the children to use their imaginations.

 

As mathematicians, we will be developing our fluency and confidence with numbers through regular Mastering Number sessions. This term, we will be securing the counting skills developed in Reception and building towards confidently counting within 100.
