  • Spring Term 4

As we reach the halfway point of the year, we’re excited about lots more fun learning ahead! With spring in the air, we’re hoping to spend even more time outside the classroom, exploring and enjoying a wide range of enriching opportunities.

In the second week back, we’ll step into the shoes of historians to answer our enquiry question: “Who helps who?” The children will explore primary and secondary sources to learn about the local historical figure Princess Campbell and discover how nursing was different in the past. To make it even more real, the children will also interview a local nurse! To celebrate their learning, we will have a showcase for you to come and visit.

For our second enquiry, the children will become geographers and scientists as we explore “How does our school change?” with the arrival of spring. We’ll observe seasonal changes, investigate plants and foods that grow at this time of year, and build on the children’s local knowledge from our previous enquiry, “What grows near us?”

As readers, there are lots of exciting moments ahead this term! We’ll celebrate World Book Day and the children’s growing love of poetry.

As authors, the children will continue to develop their phonics skills, adding exciting adjectives and using conjunctions to make their sentences sparkle! They’ll also have opportunities to create non-fiction pop-up books and retell the story of Hansel and Gretel in the past tense.

In phonics, Year 1 will continue learning split digraphs – a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, and u-e – which will boost both reading and writing skills. We’ll continue practising with Phonics Screener papers to build confidence for June.

As mathematicians, we’ll keep building fluency and confidence with numbers through our Mastering Number sessions. This term, we’ll explore number composition to 20, using practical resources to see all the ways numbers can be made and broken down.

Don’t forget to check the school website for photos of our learning adventures!
