This term is packed full of fun and engaging activities for our Year 1 children. We are beginning the term by exploring technology around us and learning about how to stay safe online.
Our first enquiry, “How does our school change?”, will begin in Week 2. During this enquiry, the children will observe how the different seasons affect our school and the local area. This learning will continue throughout the year as we experience each season. To support their understanding, we will be going on a park walk to collect autumnal objects and create our very own Journey Sticks.
Our second enquiry, “How could we play in different ways?”, will transform the children into historians as they explore how children played in the past. They will examine real-life toys to see how they have changed over time and discuss how materials and designs have evolved. To conclude this enquiry, the children will create a time capsule for a future child, showing what toys are like today.
As readers, we will continue to build on our phonics knowledge while enjoying a range of stories linked to our enquiries, including The Disgusting Sandwich, Roald Dahl’s Revolting Recipes, Tiger, It’s Snowing, and a selection of non-fiction books about children’s toys. As authors, we will be continuing to use our phonic knowledge to write simple sentences with finger spaces, capital letters, and full stops. The children will also have the opportunity to write their own recipes and explore poetry.
As mathematicians, we will continue to develop our fluency and confidence with numbers through our regular Mastering Number sessions. This term, we will be learning to count in tens and exploring the patterns this creates. We will also deepen our understanding of number composition to 20, helping the children to recognise how numbers can be made and broken down in different ways.
