Welcome to Year 1!

For the first two weeks of term we will be focussing on settling the Year 1 children into their new classes and routines. We will be reading The Colour Monster Goes To School and doing lots of fun, practical and creative activities to build relationships with each other, the adults and build the childrens' confidence in their new class environment.

As the term goes on, we will be getting stuck into lots of new and exciting learning! 

Our first enquiry will be What Do Artists Do? We will be exploring different art works as well as practicing painting techniques and colour mixing. We will be having an artist come into school to work with the children and we will be visiting a local art studio. 

Our second enquiry is called What Grows Near Me? The children will be learning about local plant life and making healthy food! We will also be visiting a community orchard. 

As readers, we will be embedding our knowledge of phonics and enjoying stories that link to our enquiries: Katie and the Artists and Jack and the Beanstalk. We will be using our phonic knowledge as writers too, focusing on writing sentences with finger spaces and capital letters. We will even be writing our own recipes!

As mathematicians we will be developing our fluency and confidence with numbers through regular Mastering Number sessions.  This term we will be securing our counting skills from Reception as well as moving on to counting within 100.
