How to help at home

Phonics:

At St Anne's, we use the Read Write Inc. programme to support with the teaching of phonics and early reading. Please find below an overview of sounds and the order in which they are taught.

Read Write Inc. sounds overview.

Common Exception Words (referred to at school as 'galaxy words').

Common exception words are words that do not follow the common phonetic spelling rules children learn in Year 1 and Year 2. These are also called tricky words or sight words as you must learn to recognise them, and can't sound them out. They aren't decodable using the normal rules and letter-sounds in phonics.

Below are the sets of words that children learn in Year 1 and Year 2.

It will be helpful to work through the sets with your child at home, practising reading and writing each word.
