Term 3

In Maths this term we continue our in-depth look into numbers 1-5 finding 1 more and 1 less than each of the numbers. We introduce the concept of Zero, an ‘empty set’. For each number we explore the composition, partitioning it into two or more parts and combining the parts to make the whole.  We will continue to explore number 5 and learn the pairs of numbers that combine together to make number 5 – ‘Number bonds to 5’.

We will then introduce numbers 6,7 and 8 continuing to apply the counting principles when counting to 6,7 and 8 forwards and backwards. Looking at all the different ways that 6,7 and 8 can be represented, noticing that we can no longer use a five frame and now require a ten frame.  As we continue to explore adding two groups of objects to make the whole and exploring solving number sentences 4 + 3 = using objects, pictures, counting on using our fingers or our knowledge of number composition/bonds.

You can practise these skills around your home, finding numbers and the different ways they are represented – an egg box, a spider’s legs, a rainbow. Playing games using two die – adding the two numbers to find the whole or exploring dominos – adding the two parts – who has more/less the winner has the bigger number.
